No means yes means rape
October 27, 2010
I recently came upon this revolting video. Not revolting because of anything graphic (you can barely see anything, as it’s dark outside and the camera appears to be sideways for much of it), but because of what they boys in the video are saying.
No, you weren’t hearing them wrong: “No means yes, yes means anal.” More under the jump.
This clip is of Yale’s Delta Kappa Epsilon frat’s pledging ritual, where pledges march blindfold through Old Campus (an area that houses most of the freshmen women) chanting things like “No means yes, yes means anal” and “Fucking sluts”.
The president of DKE has since apologized, saying the chants were “inappropriate, disrespectful, and hurtful to others” and the whole stunt was “a lapse in judgement” and “in poor taste”.
Ya think?
Honestly, this is just more proof about how many still see rape as some big joke. As PZ Meyers puts it, this is “the result of a poor upbringing that generates bully-boys who think that terrorizing women with threats of rape is hilarious, and further, a culture that looks on these beasts and forgives them, urging them to go on and bring their misogynistic attitudes to their future careers as captains of industry and masters of politics”.
Broad Recognition, a Yale feminist publication, has since been urging students to demand administrative action against DKE. “Yale women are not new to fraternity misogyny, nor are we a stranger to our administration sitting on their hands and doing absolutely nothing about it,” said one of the writers. Some other students think that people are overreacting, and that the chants aren’t dangerous. Your thoughts? Should DKE get away with a mere slap on the wrist, or should they face harsher consequences?
